The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences is unique in nurturing a vibrant research culture in a clinical setting to bridge the gap between the bench and bedside. In this direction, the Department of Research was established at ILBS to promote basic research in order to integrate the advances in modern biology with clinical and translational research in various areas of hepatobiliary sciences. Currently , our main focus is on liver regeneration and immune regulation. We are the first to report a new mechanism for intrahepatic angiogenesis which has been applauded by scientific editorial comment in a prestigious journal. To accelerate in this area, department has established a core “ILBS-NIH Laboratory of Molecular immunology” and reported distinct immune mechanisms in vertical HBV transmission with low expression of TCR zeta in CD8T cells further establishing chronicity in new borns . The department has developed the state of art facilities in the areas stem cell research, proteomics, RNA technology and metabolomics for biomarker discovery programme. Additionally, together with the clinicians, the research group is also actively involved in clinical trials to analyze the efficiency of new antiviral drugs and combined therapies of antiviral drugs with immune modulators. The research is funded solely by extramural grants from various national and international funding agencies with joint collaborations. The research activities of this department are exemplified by research publication in high impact journals which are widely cited as revelaed by the H-index.
Research activities of the department
The institute has set its priorities in few areas of liver diseases such as hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma and chronic liver failure. A multidisciplinary approach is being used to address the various issues related to liver disease.
