The Department of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation is the first such Department in the country devoted to the field of liver, pancreatic and biliary surgery and is one of the few centres in the country where living donor liver transplantation is being carried out regularly. The Department started routine operations from July 2009 and living donor liver transplantation from March 2010 and within a short span of time, has established itself as a centre of excellence in the field of HPB Surgery and Liver Transplantation.

The team of surgeons comprises of highly skilled consultants with impeccable credentials who are ably supported by dedicated surgical residents. A competent nursing and technical support team ensures optimum patient care is optimum and uncompromising. The Department specializes in the entire gamut of surgeries pertaining to diseases of the liver, pancreas and biliary tract. The surgical team is well versed in both traditional open and modern laparoscopic surgery. The team of surgeons has huge experience in liver resections, operations for gallbladder and bile duct cancer and operative management of pancreatic diseases including pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. ILBS is a tertiary level referral centre and hence, the Department regularly and efficiently manages complicated cases relevant to its specialty.

The standards of excellence are based on a strong foundation, with state of the art infrastructure. The operating suites and intensive care units (Liver transplant ICU and Surgical ICU) are ultra modern and equipped with the latest gadgetry. Rigorous quality control has ensured that technical success rates are comparable or even better than other high volume centres for HPB Surgery worldwide. However, at ILBS, quality and excellence comes at a much lower cost to the patients.

Being an academic institute, the department is conducting a highly sought after post-doctoral degree course (MCh, Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery), another first in the country. The department has firmly set its sights on research activities relevant to its specialty and aims to establish itself at the forefront in its specialty. A healthy mix of clinical and academic activities ensures that every aspect of patient care remains evidence based. Despite the focus on advancements in diagnosis and treatment of a select group of diseases, with an emphasis on research, the department has uncompromising ethical standards.
