The Academic Council is the principal academic body of the ILBS which is responsible for the maintenance of standards of education, teaching and training, inter-department co-ordination, research, examinations and tests within the Institute; and exercises such other powers and performs such other duties and functions as may be prescribed or conferred upon it by the rules and bye-laws.
ILBS runs long-term courses/training programs leading to D.M., M. Ch., Ph.D., Fellowships and other degrees. The institute already has been granted the status of a Deemed University by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for conducting such courses.

The decisions of the academic council are placed before the Governing Council of the Institute for ratification. Three meetings of the Academic council have taken place till now and the new courses which were approved have been initiated. The last meeting was held on 25th September, 2012.
After successful commencement of Post graduate courses at ILBS this year two PDCC courses were introduced in the Departments of Anesthesia and Intervention Radiology.
