Aspire to be a global role model - says Kalam

New Delhi; 14th January 2014: The Hon’ble Ex President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, popularly known as the “People’s President” inaugurated the fourth Foundation Day cum 1st Convocation Ceremony at Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences at Vasant Kunj. The function was also attended by eminent scientist Dr K Kasturirangan, the Hon’ble Health Minister for Delhi Sh Satyendra Jain, and other officials of Delhi government and ILBS.

18 candidates were admitted to various degrees awarded by the Deemed University including DM (Hepatology) and MCh (HPB Surgery) and post doctoral courses in Nephrology and Renal Transplantation, Radiology and Interventional Radiology and Transplant Anesthesia. Dr Shiv Sain, Director ILBS presented the institute’s Annual Report to a packed house which included luminaries, dignitaries, faculty of ILBS, the students and their families.

Dr Sarin said that ILBS saw more than sixty thousand patients in 2013, and also crossed the magic figure of one hundred transplants in September last year. Till date ILBS has conducted a total of 115 liver and 20 kidney transplants.

Speaking on the occasion, ex president of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam said that ILBS should aspire to be aglobal role model. He talked of various advances in genetics, oncology and other sciences and said that ILBS should adopt these technologies to be a pioneer in the field of liver sciences in the world.

In an inspiring lecture, Dr K Kasturirangan, an eminent space scientist and Member (Science) Planning Commission, GoI, talked about using space technology for healthcare. He likened ILBS to an institute on a mission mode, stressing the fact that the institute has steadily been climbing the ladder of excellence ever since its inception in 2009.

The Health Minister of Delhi Sh Satyendra Jain applauded ILBS as an example of how a government hospital should be. He said that when he became the health minister, the one question he was faced with was how to improve government hospitals. After visiting ILBS, however, his difficulty was solved as there already was a government hospital functioning at full efficiency. He said that the government merely needed to replicate the model of ILBS in other government hospitals to alleviate their condition.
