The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi is both the youngest and the newest addition to an already existing network of medical universities in India. However, ILBS is laid with a foundation to become an international centre of excellence in clinical care and research in the field of liver diseases. At ILBS, we provide an environment for not only an advanced training in clinical care but also to pursue path breaking research of international standards in liver, biliary and allied sciences. Our strong commitment towards imparting quality liver-centric education gave us the 8th rank under the “medical category” in the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) by the government of India. The environment at ILBS aims to groom students to raise novel clinical questions, see the old and existing literature with a new angle develop creative imagination and new skills. As is rightly said by Albert Einstein “Research born from an inquiring mind is one of the sublime creative activities of mankind”. We respect the diversity of scientific research in a free research environment and also develop international exchange to further accelerate the creation of advanced knowledge. Our research has unveiled the pathogenetic basis of Hepatitis B clearance and persistence, sepsis, immunoparesis and other complications in liver patients, liver regeneration in context of liver failure and cirrhosis, understanding the albumin biology and we have been leading in unveiling the role of gut microbiome, metagenome and metabolome in context of liver diseases. Our goal is to contribute to the sustainable development of human society through the research and education together with the faculty and students of ILBS. I hope that you will join us and open new paths for the future.
