ILBS Celebrates 10th Convocation Day; Graduates a Decade of Excellence in Liver Sciences
New Delhi, June 30, 2026: The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), India's first dedicated liver university, today celebrated its landmark 10th Convocation Ceremony, marking a decade of academic excellence, clinical innovation and global leadership in liver sciences.
The ceremony was graced by Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, Hon'ble Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, as the Chief Guest. Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, Hon'ble Health Minister, Delhi, attended as Guests of Honour. The ceremony was also attended by Sh. Rajeev Verma, IAS, Chief Secretary, GNCTD-cum-Chairman, ILBS.
Degrees were conferred upon 36 Post-doctoral students, and 8 Ph.D. students, across ILBS' various super-specialty academic programmes, adding another distinguished batch of highly trained liver physicians, surgeons, scientists and nursing professionals to the country's healthcare workforce. The occasion marked the completion of ten generations of specialists trained by ILBS since its inception.
Addressing the graduating students, Shri J.P. Nadda congratulated them on earning degrees from one of the world's foremost institutions and a Dedicated Liver University. He described ILBS as a globally renowned centre of excellence that has played a pioneering role not only in treatment but also in the prevention of liver diseases. He complemented ILBS for making people of India aware of Liver Health. He emphasized that super-specialty medical education is a privilege carrying with it a profound responsibility to serve society and make liver care available throughout India. He stressed the role of policy makers and health ecosystem for the success of super-specialty programs.
Highlighting the Government of India's commitment towards strengthening healthcare infrastructure and human resources, Shri Nadda outlined the unprecedented expansion in medical education, including the rapid increase in AIIMS, medical colleges, undergraduate and postgraduate seats across the country. Appreciating ILBS' sustained focus on preventive liver healthcare, he mandated ILBS to develop a national framework for liver disease screening through the Ayushman Arogya Mandirs to facilitate early detection and reduce the burden of chronic liver diseases. Responding positively to proposals presented by ILBS, he assured that the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare would continue to support all innovative public health initiatives emerging from ILBS.
Presenting the Institute's annual report titled 'Yakrit Deep – The Eternal Flame of Liver', Prof. S.K. Sarin highlighted another year of remarkable achievements. During 2025, ILBS treated over 1.6 lakh liver patients, managed 10,800 liver emergencies, and crossed 1,392 successful liver transplants, including 162 liver transplants performed during the year. The institute also performed 372 kidney transplants, with nearly 29 percent benefiting economically weaker patients. He reported that ILBS has emerged as Delhi's leading centre under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, having treated over 2,000 beneficiaries, including kidney transplant recipients.
Prof. Sarin also highlighted ILBS' growing global academic footprint, major research accomplishments and technological innovations, including new addition of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning programme, Digital Pathology, India's National Liver Disease Biobank, DM programmes, significant competitive research funding, international collaborations and pioneering public health initiatives such as Swasth Yakrit Mission, Liver Smiles Clinics, and Y-Smiles for school children. He thanked Union Minister Sh. Nadda for supporting the national initiative to reduce fatty liver disease, emphasizing that prevention today would help reduce the future burden of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
Congratulating the graduating students, Prof. Sarin reminded them that “universities become great not by producing good graduates, but when their graduates make history”, He urged them to remain lifelong learners, transform healthcare through compassion, innovation and leadership and carry forward the spirit of ILBS wherever they serve.
The 10th Convocation Ceremony celebrated not merely a decade of academic excellence but also ILBS' emergence as a global leader in liver sciences, research, innovation, education and public health, reaffirming its commitment to advancing liver care for India and the world.
