Qualification

Dr. Gayatri graduated from Jawaharlal Nehru University and perused her postdoctoral work at National Cancer Institute, NIH, USA. Prior to joining ILBS she work as staff scientist at CDFD, Hyderabad. Her areas of research interests include understanding mechanism, which are important in stress response. Her current work involves identifying novel hepatostats i.e growth  inhibitors leading to  senescence or quiescence

The laboratory of cancer cell biology focuses on the following areas:

  • Role of signaling pathways during neoplastic transformation: Our group had previously proposed a role of wild type Ras in growth arrest and in continuation with this we made an unusual observation on significantly low amounts of wild type Ras-p21 in hepatocellular carcinoma (Bose et al., 2011). These results have prompted revaluation on newer role of wild type Ras as a possible growth suppressor and a stochastic model for progression of hepatic cancer. 
  • Epigenetic modulations by histone deacetylases during carcinogenesis and senescence:  Currently trying to understand the role of NAD+ dependent deacetylases namely Sirtuins. Amongst all the various Sirtuin members, SIRT7 is the least explored in context of cellular survival and neoplasia. Our work has thrown light on its subcellular localization and role in cellular survival ( Kiran et al, 2013).  Since cellular senescence which is at crossroads of both ageing and cancer we are trying to understand the impact of stress induced premature senescence in context of liver disease progression (Ramakrishna, 2012).
    • Immunophillins as new targets for cancer therapeutic.  In search for newer drug targets in cancer therapeutics, work from our group is suggestive of a caspase independent cell death in cancer cells following inhibition of cyclophilins (Babul  et al, 2014).
