The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) is a tertiary care, super-specialty hospital located in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, India. It was established in 2009 by the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi as an autonomous institute under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The ILBS is a mono-superspeciality hospital, which means that it provides primarily liver and biliary care. This focus on a single organ system allows the institute to achieve a high degree of expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of liver and biliary diseases

The ILBS has a team of over 1000 doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The doctors are all highly qualified and experienced in liver and biliary diseases. They have received training in some of the best medical institutions in India and abroad.

The ILBS has a state-of-the-art infrastructure. It has a sanctioned capacity of 549 beds, out of which more than 300 are already operational, 4 operation theaters, a 24x7 emergency department, a blood bank, a pathology laboratory, and a radiology department. The hospital also has a dedicated research center.

The ILBS offers a wide range of services for the diagnosis and treatment of liver and biliary diseases. These services include:

  • Liver transplantation: The ILBS is one of the leading liver transplant centers in India. It has performed over 900 liver transplants since its inception.

  • Kidney transplantation: The ILBS also performs kidney transplants. It has performed over 250 kidney transplants since its inception.

  • Hepatectomy: The ILBS performs a variety of liver surgeries, including hepatectomy. Hepatectomy is the surgical removal of part or all of the liver.

  • Cholangiocarcinoma surgery: The ILBS performs surgery for cholangiocarcinoma, which is a type of bile duct cancer.

  • Pancreatic surgery: The ILBS performs surgery for pancreatic diseases, such as pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis.

  • Endoscopic procedures: The ILBS performs a variety of endoscopic procedures, such as ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) and EUS (endoscopic ultrasound). ERCP is a procedure that is used to diagnose and treat diseases of the bile ducts and pancreas. EUS is a procedure that is used to visualize the liver and other organs in the abdomen.

  • Interventional radiology procedures: The ILBS performs a variety of interventional radiology procedures, such as TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt) and TACE (transarterial chemoembolization). TIPS is a procedure that is used to relieve portal hypertension. TACE is a procedure that is used to treat liver cancer.

  • Medical management of liver diseases: The ILBS also provides medical management for liver diseases, such as hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis, and liver failure.

  • Dialysis: The ILBS has a dialysis unit that provides treatment for patients with kidney failure.

  • Cancer treatment: The ILBS has a cancer treatment center that provides treatment for liver and other cancers.

  • Research: The ILBS has a strong research focus. It conducts research on liver and biliary diseases, transplantation, and other topics.

  • Education: The ILBS is also a deemed-to-be university. It offers a variety of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in liver and biliary sciences.

The ILBS is a leading center for liver and biliary care in India. It has been ranked as one of the top 10 medical institutes in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The ILBS is also a deemed-to-be university, which means that it has the authority to grant degrees.

The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) is a NABH accredited facility. NABH stands for National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers. It is a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. NABH accreditation is a voluntary process that hospitals and healthcare providers can undergo to demonstrate their commitment to quality care.

The ILBS was first accredited by NABH in 2012 and has been re-accredited twice since then, most recently in 2023. The NABH accreditation process is rigorous and requires hospitals and healthcare providers to meet a set of standards in areas such as patient safety, quality of care, and infection control.

The ILBS is one of the few government hospitals in India that has been accredited by NABH. This accreditation is a testament to the hospital's commitment to providing high-quality care to its patients.

The Institute was constructed and operationalised in two phases:

  • Phase I: The first phase of the ILBS was built by the Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi and was completed in 2010. It was initially designed to have a total of 180 beds, including 74 intensive care unit beds. The phase I facilities include an emergency department, operation theaters, a blood bank, a pathology laboratory, and a radiology department.

  • Phase II: The second phase of the ILBS was constructed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and became operational in 2016. It has a envisaged capacity of more than 300 beds, including 100 ICU beds. The phase -II facilities include a dedicated research complex, an auditorium, a guest house, a hepato-biliary oncology unit, and additional residential accommodation for doctors and nurses.
