Endoscopy
The Gastroenterologists at ILBS routinely perform the follwing endoscopic procedures:
Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (UGIE)
UGIE is a procedure to examine the upper portion of gastrointestinal system that includes esophagus, stomach and duodenum. Examination comprises of passage of flexible lighted tube with a tiny camera through the mouth. The procedure is used to diagnose diseases such as ulcer, tumors and infection., and also treat a variety of disorders.
Narrow Band Imaging (NBI)
NBI is a new endoscopic technique to detect cancer at an early stage.
Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is a procedure to examine the lining of rectum and colon, also called large intestine. Examination comprises of passage of flexible lighted tube then with a tiny camera into the anus. The tube is gently advanced into the rectum and colon. Colonoscopy helps in diagnosis of cancer, infection and inflammatory disorders of the large intestine. You will be given medication for sedation to help you relax during the examination.
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
EUS is a procedure to examine the digestive tract and surrounding organs including liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Examination comprises of passage of flexible lighted tube with a tiny camera through the mouth. This tube has a small ultrasound transducer attached to its tip for performing the examination from inside the body. Because of high frequency ultrasound waves and the proximity of the tip of the endoscope to the organs inside body, detailed examination for detection of tumors and other diseases can be performed. Other uses of EUS include obtaining tissue specimens (biopsy) by passing a special needle, and studying the flow of blood inside the vessels. The tissue obtained by the needle can be studied under microscope by the pathologist.
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography(ERCP)
ERCP is a procedure to examine the biliary and pancreatic ducts for the detection and treatment of stones, cancer and other disorders. Examination comprises of passage of a flexible lighted tube with a tiny camera through the mouth followed by gradual advancement into the duodenum. In the duodenum a small opening called the papilla is identified ,a small plastic tube is passed into this opening to inject a dye (contrast) in the bile and pancreatic duct. This can be followed by stent placement, stone removal or the other therapeutic procedures.
Capsule Endoscopy (CE)
Capsule endoscopy is a procedure to examine the small intestine. The procedure comprises of swallowing of a capsule which contains a tiny digital camera, image capture device, light source, radio transmitter and battery. The capsule passes through the digestive system while taking pictures of the intestine. The images are transmitted wirelessly to a sensor array or pads which is placed on your abdomen. These sensors are attached to a image recorder that is worn around the waist. After 8 hours the images are transferred to a computer for analysis. CE helps in diagnosing diseases such as bleeding, cancers and Crohn’s disease.
